 Poultry Diseases Glossary 






Airsacculitis:         
                     An inflammation of the air sac, caused by MG etc.

All In All Out:
                    Obtain all chicks or pullet at one time, preferably from a single source and hatch.Start all the birds together and never add any birds to the flock.

Breeders:                
                    Poultry selected and managed specifically to produce eggs for hatching

Broiler: 
                     A young chicken of a size and breed suitable for broiling, usually 1 kg,or progeny or product of poultry breeders

Brooder:
                     A shelter or hover, usually heated,for young chicks

Broody:
                      Ready to brood; said of hens showing strong inclination to sit on a nest

Bursa of Fabricius:
                     An epithelial out growth of  the cloaca in the poultry that is primary site of B-Cell production. It regresses with age and is usually a vestigial organ in mature birds

Candling : 
                      The process of examining eggs in front of a strong beam of light to determine quality,and fertility etc

Capon:
                      A castrated rooster

Caponization:
                      The castration of a rooster.

Cecum:                   
                       Blind pouch, Poultry have a paired ceca, which are attached to the large intestine near its junction with small intestine

Chick:             A young chicken
Cockerel:        A young rooster ( cock)
Comb:             A red fleshy out growth on the top of the head of certain fowl. 

Confinement Rearing: 
                        The practice of raising poultry in doors


Comish weight:
                         Meat Type chickens often pullets , grown to no more than 2 pounds dress weight

Drake:              A male duck

Ear lobe Chickens: :
                         A rounded , some times pigmented area of skin near the external ear canal of the chickens

Egg dipping:
                        The practice of submerging eggs, under certain conditions of times and temperature, in solution antibiotics. The purpose is to reduce or Eliminate certain micro organism within the eggs. For the same reasons, fertile eggs heated or inoculated with antibiotics

 Ganders:        A male goose.

Gizzard:           
                         A muscular enlargement of the elementary canal in the birds for grinding material entering from the proventriculus.

Hatchability:
                          Refers to the number of eggs, in a fertile set, that hatch successfully. also may refers to the number of eggs that hatch of the total number of eggs set.

Hen:                   The female chicken.

Incubation:
                         The process of Hatching chicks, by artificial means, usually in controlled sanitation condition. The time required for hatching of fertile eggs is refer as incubation period

Layer:                 A common breed of chicken developed for egg laying.

Meat birds:         Same as broiler, cornish and roaster

Molting: 
                             The process of shedding and replacing the feather. Chicken can be "force molted" by manipulating the diet and light.

Parental immunity: 
                               Immunity obtained through antibodies passed to the chicks through absorption of the yolk materiel.

Pullet:                      A young turkey, or breeder or layer female during rearing.

Proventriculus:        Granular stomach of the chicken and avian species.

 Ranged Poultry:      Birds allows access to pasture a large lot.

Roaster:                    Meat type chicken grown to live weight between 6 and 8 pound.

Sentinel bird:         
                                  Birds lacking immunity to specific disease used for the detection of  infectious agents by placement into commercial flocks. Seroconversions or pathogens isolation is determined in theses birds.

Snood:                       A flashy protuberance at the base of the beak of the turkey.

Spent fowl cycle:      Birds from layer or breeders flocks marketed for meat at the end of laying.
